In the waning days of this election we’ve heard the unenlightened refer to Sen. Barack Obama with a barrage of un-American -ist labels:
- Activist
- Leftist
- Elitist
- Black liberationist (friend of…)
- Terrorist sympathizer
- Socialist
- Communist (friend of…)
- Redistributionist (??? – ask Mr. McCain…)
- And this afternoon, on Chris Matthew’s show “Hardball,” former U.S. representative Tom Delay (himself no stranger to ethics scandals) labeled Obama a “radical Marxist.”
Well two can play that game. Here are some -ist words I’d use to describe the McCain/Palin ticket and campaign:
- Absurdist
- Alarmist
- Cabalist
- Copyist
- Dadaist (by accident)
- Demolitionist
- Divisionist
- Dogmatist
- Evolutionist
- Fascist
- Illusionist
- Imperialist
- Irrationalist
- Jingoist
- Malapropist
- Militarist
- Narcissist
- Nationalist
- Propagandist
- Rightist
- Roveist
- Simplist
- Unconservationist

The Scranton, Pa., Times-Tribune: “America’s problems call for new leadership. In that regard, Mr. Obama has the potential to be a truly transformational figure. There has been much speculation about the potential impact of race on the election and an Obama presidency. But the truer transformation in his election would lie in a different demographic. He represents a generational shift and a view definitively rooted in the future rather than the past. He will strive to heal our wounds abroad and call Americans to common purpose at home. His time is now.”
The Minneapolis Star Tribune: “An Obama presidency would reaffirm for the country and the world the possibilities offered by a free, inclusive and democratic society. It would herald an important generational shift in American leadership and provide hope for a more unified nation.
“Even after a bruising campaign by two strong candidates, Obama’s optimistic message of unity endures. On Nov. 4, Americans will set a new course. In Barack Obama, they have a candidate who can inspire faith in better days to come.”
Anchorage Daily News: “It is Sen. Obama who truly promises fundamental change in Washington. You need look no further than the guilt-by-association lies and sound-bite distortions of the degenerating McCain campaign to see how readily he embraces the divisive, fear-mongering tactics of Karl Rove. And while Sen. McCain points to the fragile success of the troop surge in stabilizing conditions in Iraq, it is also plain that he was fundamentally wrong about the more crucial early decisions. Contrary to his assurances, we were not greeted as liberators; it was not a short, easy war; and Americans — not Iraqi oil — have had to pay for it. It was Sen. Obama who more clearly saw the danger ahead.”
Re: Gov. Sarah Palin — “Yet despite her formidable gifts, few who have worked closely with the governor would argue she is truly ready to assume command of the most important, powerful nation on earth. To step in and juggle the demands of an economic meltdown, two deadly wars and a deteriorating climate crisis would stretch the governor beyond her range. Like picking Sen. McCain for president, putting her one 72-year-old heartbeat from the leadership of the free world is just too risky at this time.”
The Baltimore Sun: “Senator Obama is a relative newcomer on the national stage. But he has proved to be that rarest of public servants, an inspirational leader who would transcend any enduring racial barriers and call upon the best in the American character, a public servant who also possesses the finely honed political skills necessary to turn the nation’s highest ideals into practical policies that benefit citizens.”
New Orleans Time-Picayune: “Over the past century, there have been moments when the world held its breath and looked to America for the next move: Our rescue of a broken Europe after World War II; the Cuban missile crisis; the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
“We are again at a critical juncture in history. Global markets are imploding. People’s life savings are dwindling. Energy needs and climate change call the very foundations of modern society into question. Rogue nations and terrorist organizations have heightened the danger of nuclear proliferation. These problems transcend national boundaries.
“Here in the New Orleans area, a cataclysmic man-made flood turned our world upside down and revealed a profound national neglect of our infrastructure. Our vulnerability and the government’s unpreparedness were emblematic of other disasters waiting to happen elsewhere in this country.
“America is poised on the cusp of new leadership, and once again the world, transfixed, is watching. Who is equal to these challenges? Who will lead the nation that leads the free world?
“Our choice: Barack Obama.”

Make sure to read Paul Krugman’s column “Desperately Seeking Seriousness.” In it the recent Nobel Economics Prize winner describes where McCain’s campaign went wrong — in the midst of the nation’s worst financial crisis since the Great Depression. “The Obama campaign has hardly been fluff-free — in its early stages it was full of vague uplift. But the Barack Obama voters see now is cool, calm, intellectual and knowledgeable, able to talk coherently about the financial crisis in a way Mr. McCain can’t. And when the world seems to be falling apart, you don’t turn to a guy you’d like to have a beer with, you turn to someone who might actually know how to fix the situation,” Krugman writes.

The New York Times: “Mr. Obama has met challenge after challenge, growing as a leader and putting real flesh on his early promises of hope and change. He has shown a cool head and sound judgment. We believe he has the will and the ability to forge the broad political consensus that is essential to finding solutions to this nation’s problems.
“In the same time, Senator John McCain of Arizona has retreated farther and farther to the fringe of American politics, running a campaign on partisan division, class warfare and even hints of racism. His policies and worldview are mired in the past. His choice of a running mate so evidently unfit for the office was a final act of opportunism and bad judgment that eclipsed the accomplishments of 26 years in Congress. …
“Mr. Obama has withstood some of the toughest campaign attacks ever mounted against a candidate. He’s been called un-American and accused of hiding a secret Islamic faith. The Republicans have linked him to domestic terrorists and questioned his wife’s love of her country. Ms. Palin has also questioned millions of Americans’ patriotism, calling Republican-leaning states ‘pro-America.’
“This politics of fear, division and character assassination helped Mr. Bush drive Mr. McCain from the 2000 Republican primaries and defeat Senator John Kerry in 2004. It has been the dominant theme of his failed presidency.
“The nation’s problems are simply too grave to be reduced to slashing ‘robo-calls’ and negative ads. This country needs sensible leadership, compassionate leadership, honest leadership and strong leadership. Barack Obama has shown that he has all of those qualities.”

Dumb: The highest paid member of the McCain campaign during the first two weeks of this month was Amy Strozzi. Never heard of her? Why she’s Sarah Palin’s makeup artist. Strozzi was paid $22,800 for applying foundation and eyeliner and blush. Tough work if you can get it, Joe Plumber! Wonder how that money could have been used to prop up GOP contenders around the country?
Despicable: McCain volunteer Ashley Todd who raised the spectre of race-baiting in Pittsburgh with a fake story of a campaign-related attack. According to the Associated Press, Todd “told investigators she was attempting to use a bank branch ATM on Wednesday night when a 6-foot-4 black man approached her from behind, put a knife blade to her throat and demanded money. She told police she handed the assailant $60 and walked away.
“Todd, who is white, told investigators she suspected the man then noticed a John McCain sticker on her car. She said the man punched her in the back of the head, knocked her to the ground and scratched a backward letter “B” into her face with a dull knife.
“Police said Todd claimed the man told her that he was going to “teach her a lesson” for supporting the Republican presidential candidate, and that she was going to become a supporter of Democratic candidate Barack Obama.”
The AP adds “Todd (of Texas) worked in New York for the College Republican National Committee before moving two weeks ago to Pennsylvania, where her duties included recruiting college students, the committee’s executive director, Ethan Eilon, has said.”
Too bad Todd didn’t read Anne Tyler’s novel, “A Slipping Down Life” before the incident. It would have warned her what happens when you carve initials into your face while looking into a mirror. D’oh!
Most Despicable: Michael Savage said on his radio show Friday that while Obama was in Hawaii visiting his ailing grandmother, he could picture him holding with a pillow over her head saying, c’mon, Granny, hurry up and die.
Seriously, despite yada-yada free speech, is there any sane reason why this crass idiot is allowed to remain on the airwaves? The fact that he and others of his ilk (Limbaugh, are you listening?) remain on the air says nothing positive about the current state of America and its manners or taste.

- Go see “W”. It’s not a great film, but the actors do a terrific job and it provides a reminder of what we’ve survived under a Bush presidency and it provides some background for the next task;
- Read the Rolling Stone article by Tim Dickinson, Make-Believe Maverick, about the real John McCain, NOT the myth we’ve been presented with during this campaign. Dickinson asserts that W and McCain are not that different. Folks, this is a must read!

Gen. Colin Powell has just endorsed Sen. Barack Obama for president. In explaining his decision to Tom Brokaw on “Meet the Press” this morning, Powell cited McCain’s choice of the inexperienced Palin for VP, the insidious robocalling efforts making it sound as if Obama is a terrorist and the GOP’s prejudicial comments toward American Muslims. In a quite moving moment, Powell told of a photo he saw of a mother weeping for her son at his grave in Arlington Cemetery. The young man was 14 when 9/11 occurred, and he’d gone to Iraq recently where he earned a Purple Heart among other awards for service to this nation. At the top of his tombstone, Powell said you could see that there was a crescent moon and star — the symbols of Islam. This young man, too, was a proud American.
Other newspapers endorsing Obama for president include The Boston Globe; Las Cruces, New Mexico, Sun-Times; Portland’s Oregonian; the Philadelphia Inquirer; the Miami Herald; the Atlanta Journal-Constitution; Salt Lake Tribune; Bangor Daily News; Times-Record of Brunswick, Maine; Kansas City Star; Southwest News Herald (Illinois); the Sacramento Bee and The Columbian.
√ The Miami Herald writes: “Sen. Obama’s early dissent amid the war fever of 2002-03 took courage. It reflects a clear-eyed appreciation for the proper use of U.S firepower and a cool temperament that rejects employing military force except as a last, necessary resort. His insistence that U.S. power be focused on the conflict in Afghanistan — which he rightly calls the central front of the war on terror — represents a better, more effective use of military resources.”
√ The Kansas City Star writes: “Despite his age and previous health problems, McCain chose a vice presidential candidate who is so clearly unqualified for high office that the thought of her stepping into the presidency is frightening.
“That irresponsible decision casts serious doubt on McCain’s judgment at this point in his political career. And over the past eight years, Americans have come to know, all too well, the high price of carelessness and ineptitude in the White House….
“Obama’s ascendancy is a tribute both to him and to the ideal that the United States is a land of opportunity for all. His achievements are the result of hard work and merit. His election as America’s first biracial president would be a milestone in the nation’s long journey toward racial equality.”
√ The Sacramento Bee writes: “While his career in public service has been relatively brief, he has shown a resolute sense of purpose. His campaign for the presidency has demonstrated his even temperament, his discipline and his ability to create coalitions. His life story is uniquely American and uniquely compelling.
“He has shown that he is comfortable surrounding himself with people – notably his choice for vice president, Joe Biden – who can help compensate for his lack of broad experience. Most important, he has demonstrated an ability to inspire – an ability that will be essential as the next president works to restore confidence here and abroad.
“But for all its admirable qualities, McCain’s record also is dotted with instances of impulsive actions and dubious judgments. The most recent is his choice of a stunningly unqualified running mate.”

On Wednesday night, Joe the unlicensed plumber became a cause célèbre for John McCain. Why, he’d lose his chance at buying a business under Obama’s tax plan, he said. Two days later, McCain’s camp was blaming Obama for smearing Joe’s good name and ruining his privacy.
A friend of mine in Florida, however, sent me an email she got from the McCain camp on THURSDAY at 3:28 p.m. (though she’s asked to be removed from their list three times) that uses Joe the plumber unabashedly. See my comments added in red:
Who is Joe the Plumber?
His name is Joe Wurzelbacher and he is a(n unlicensed) plumber from Ohio. Last night in the Presidential Debate, Joe the Plumber became a symbol of the economic troubles crippling the United States. Joe (the GOP plant) encountered Senator Obama while he was campaigning in Toledo, Ohio earlier this week. Joe wants to buy the company he works for (so he says, but there’s no paperwork record of him doing so), but purchasing it would make him a target of the Democrat’s plan to tax the “wealthy.” (Why? According to records the business is worth maybe $100,000. It WOULD benefit from Obama’s plan.) Joe told Senator Obama about his frustrations with Obama’s plans to raise taxes on the “wealthy” and the Illinois senator replied that it was important to “spread the wealth around.”Spread the Wealth?
Yes, Senator Barack Obama said he wants to “spread the wealth around.”
That means that he wants to take Joe’s, and countless (not really, Obama’s plan would tax just 2 percent of small businesses) other small business owners’, hard earned money. Senator Obama wants to raise their taxes so he can pay for his government mandated healthcare system and other big government programs. He wants to punish (oh please, this is ridiculous!) small business owners who are successful and about to climb the next step on the economic ladder by spreading their “wealth.”It’s No Surprise that Obama Wants to “Spread the Wealth Around”
It’s no surprise that Senator Obama wants to spread Joe the Plumbers “wealth.” He voted for higher taxes 94 times (according to factcheck.org, this is a lie: ”We count 23 that would not have raised taxes at all, but were merely votes against tax cuts. Seven of them would have lowered taxes for many.”) in four years in the United States Senate. And, he requested nearly $1 billion dollars of your money for wasteful pork barrel spending. Imagine what he will do as the most powerful man in the United States. Obama’s rhetoric sounds nice now, but it will feel like a painful sucker punch if he is elected and his plans to raise taxes are implemented.Senator McCain will Fight for Every Joe the Plumber
John McCain consistently voted against tax increases and never once took a wasteful pork barrel project. (According to PolitiFact.com: his 2006 legislation that asked for $10-million for an academic center at the University of Arizona to honor the late Supreme Court Chief Justice William Rehnquist. Or McCain’s 2003 effort to use federal funds to buy property to create a buffer zone around Luke Air Force Base in Arizona, or his 1992 request that the Environmental Protection Agency provide $5-million toward a wastewater project in Nogales, Ariz. Never say never, Sen. McCain.) As a result he was given an “A” rating by the National Taxpayers Union and has received awards from the Citizens Against Government Waste for being a good steward of taxpayer money. John McCain wants to lower your taxes and reduce government spending and has the record to back up his rhetoric.Every “Joe the Plumber” Must Fight Against Senator Obama Before It’s Too Late
If you are a small business owner and don’t want the government to spread your wealth, let us know. Join our “Joe the Plumber” coalition (hope they’re paying this guy big bucks for this) by sending your story to FLJoethePlumber@JohnMcCain.com or by calling our “Joe the Plumber” hotline at 850-391-3304. Tell us how raising taxes and “spreading the wealth around” will hurt your business. It’s important we stop these (and today’s anti-Obama rhetoric buzzword is…) socialist -like plans to take your money and redistribute it.

“We have tremendous confidence in his intellectual rigor, his moral compass and his ability to make sound, thoughtful, careful decisions. He is ready.”
√ Los Angeles Times
“We need a leader who demonstrates thoughtful calm and grace under pressure, one not prone to volatile gesture or capricious pronouncement. We need a leader well-grounded in the intellectual and legal foundations of American freedom. Yet we ask that the same person also possess the spark and passion to inspire the best within us: creativity, generosity and a fierce defense of justice and liberty…
“Indeed, the presidential campaign has rendered McCain nearly unrecognizable. His selection of Sarah Palin as his running mate was, as a short-term political tactic, brilliant. It was also irresponsible, as Palin is the most unqualified vice presidential nominee of a major party in living memory. The decision calls into question just what kind of thinking — if that’s the appropriate word — would drive the White House in a McCain presidency. Fortunately, the public has shown more discernment, and the early enthusiasm for Palin has given way to national ridicule of her candidacy and McCain’s judgment.”
√ El Diario/La Prensa
“Nuestra nación necesita liderazgo fuerte, constante y centrado en el bien común. El 4 de noviembre, deposite su voto por el senador Barack Obama.”
“Our nation needs constant, strong leadership that is centered in the common good. On Nov. 4, vote for Sen. Barack Obama.”
√ San Francisco Chronicle
“Throughout a campaign that has been intense — and at some points ugly — Obama has kept his composure and maintained a vision of optimism that has drawn an unparalleled wave of young people into the political process. His policies and his persona have offered hope to a nation that is deeply polarized, swimming in debt, mired in war and ridden with anxiety. He taps into that treasured American reservoir — patriotism — with his calls for sacrifice and national service.
“Barack Obama is the right president for these troubled times.”
√ Chicago Sun-Times
“Success will require audacity, in all the best meanings of the word: nerve, spunk, grit and, especially, boldness.
“And success will require a president and a people ready to embrace hope, in all the best meanings of that word: A conviction that what we want and need can be had.
“Barack Obama believes in the audacity of hope. He inspires it in others. He inspires it in us.”
√ Denver Post
“Republicans love to mock Obama’s history as a community organizer. But here was a man with no money to offer, no patronage to dispense, no way to punish his opponents. All he could do was to work with people from all walks of life, liberals and conservatives, business people and the unemployed, and bring them together in common cause for a better community. Could there really be better preparation to reunite a worried and divided America to again pursue our “more perfect union”?”

What is it about the GOP and Ohio voters? Remember 2004’s presidential election and the Diebold debacle?
The latest volley was when the GOP convinced a federal appeals court that Ohio Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner must come up with a way to provide a list of new registered voters’ names that do not match government databases. Had she been pressed to do so, by today, it would have meant that 200,000 voters would have to fill out provisional ballots that would be counted only if there were a discrepancy. Most of those newly registered voters are, what a shocker!, Democrats. So in a state where there is a groundswell of support for Obama, this could tilt a close result in favor of McCain. The result would be to disenfranchise 200,000 voters. Sounds like a tactic you’d find in a banana republic, not the proud US of A.
Today the Supreme Court ruled that “they were granting Brunner’s request because it appears that the law does not allow private entities, like the Ohio GOP, to file suit to enforce the provision of the law at issue.” It was an unsigned ruling that avoided tangling with the Help America Vote Act.
Yay for Ohio’s voters!
